FAQ
Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) means the solar cell is the roofing material—it replaces the roof, not just sits on top of it. The PS Dark 400 is a structural roofing tile that generates power. Traditional bolt-on panels are mounted above an existing roof, adding weight and penetrations. BIPV eliminates the rack system entirely and has a substantially lower profile.
The 30% federal ITC (Section 48 of the IRA) applies to business entities—LLCs, sole proprietors with a home office, commercial property owners, and landlords with rental properties. If your install qualifies as business property, you get 30% of the full installed cost as a federal tax credit. Always confirm with your CPA before filing.
Both are BIPV systems, but the PS Dark 400 uses a full-panel monocrystalline cell format rather than Tesla's interlocked tile system. This typically means higher efficiency per square foot, faster install time for experienced roofers, and a simpler supply chain. The PS Dark 400 is sold through roofing distributors and contractors rather than direct-to-consumer, making it more accessible for commercial and multi-family projects.
For an experienced roofing crew, a residential install typically runs 2 to 4 days for the roof deck plus electrical rough-in. Commercial projects vary by scope. Your HardwiredRoof installer can give you a project-specific timeline after a site assessment.
Individual PS Dark 400 tiles can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the roof. The system allows a contractor to pull and replace a single damaged section—a significant advantage over traditional bolt-on systems where a failed panel can complicate waterproofing around the mounting hardware.
You need both a roofing license and a solar contractor license (or a licensed electrical subcontractor for the electrical portion). HardwiredRoof provides product-specific installation training and technical support for new installers. Contact us to discuss onboarding for your crew.
Currently the PS Dark 400 is available in the dark slate finish shown on this site. Additional colorways may be available in the future—contact us for the latest product availability.
